De Blasio Defends Pre-K Program

Mayor Bill de Blasio says about 50,000 students have enrolled in his pre-k program.  But it’s facing scrutiny just a week before it’s set to launch.

New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer said he hasn’t received more than half of the contracts with pre-k providers, raising a safety concern.  He complained that the de Blasio administration won’t even tell him when the contracts will be delivered to his office.

“The fact is, we don’t have an example that’s been provided us by the comptroller’s office, something where there’s a specific danger that we have to address,” de Blasio said.

The universal pre-k program has been a signature policy of Mayor de Blasio.  He campaigned on the promise last year and pushed for it during his early months in office.

School in New York City will begin next week.
