Father of Adam Lanza Speaks Out

Father of Adam Lanza Speaks Out
Posted Monday, March 10th 2014 @ 10am  by Terry Trahim

More than a year after Adam Lanza killed 20 children and 6 educators at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, his father is speaking publicly.

"You can't get any more evil," Peter Lanza told The New Yorker.  "How much do I beat up on myself about the fact that he's my son?  A lot."

It was on the morning of December 14, 2012 that Adam Lanza entered the Sandy Hook school and opened fire.  Twenty six people were killed before Lanza took his own life.  Earlier in the morning, Lanza had killed his mother Nancy with four shots.  Peter Lanza said each of those four shots represented a member of the family.

"With hindsight, I know Adam would have killed me in a heartbeat, if he'd had the chance.  I don't question that for a minute," he said.

Peter and Nancy Lanza divorced in the fall of 2009.  He hadn't seen his son for the two years leading up to the shooting.

But he knew something was wrong with Adam long before then.  Peter Lanza said his worries grew when Adam entered middle school.

"It was crystal clear something was wrong," he said.  "The social awkwardness, the uncomfortable anxiety, unable to sleep, stress, unable to concentrate, having a hard time learning, the awkward walk, reduced eye contact.  You could see the changes occurring."
