Gov. David Paterson: Albany Has 'Lower Caliber Elected Officials'
Posted April 5th, 2013 @ 9:43am

David Paterson, former governor of New York, joined John Gambling to discuss the recent scandal involving corrupt elected officials attempting to fix results in the New York City mayoral race.

"Let's leave out the character issue - you've gotta be pretty stupid," said Paterson about the recently charged officials. "I've gotta tell you - most of the things that people try to do illegally, they could have done it legally."

So, what's the fix for the corruption that's happening in Albany?

"If there is a fix," asked Gambling, "how come it wasn't done 15 or 20 years ago?"

"I don't think it would be particularly popular - I don't think it sounds politically correct," said the former Governor. "I think what we have now is a lower caliber of elected officials than we've had."

After mentioning that the salary of most politicians is a far cry from anything lucrative, Paterson suggested this could be one of the reasons for this decline in moral standards.

"I think on both sides of the aisle the leadership would agree that you're not getting the product that you once got years ago," he said.
